Samples for Science

Tissue Solutions is an ISO 9001:2015 certified provider of high quality human biomaterials for research. Our Research Tissue Collection Bank processes are approved by an Independent Ethics Committee and are collected to the Human Tissues Act (HTA) codes of practice, allowing the collection of human biomaterials for research purposes. Samples are collected and transported directly to researchers for their projects.

The collection of these Human biomaterials for scientific research may aid in the investigation into the possible causes and potential treatments of specific diseases. These studies need healthy volunteers and those who suffer from certain diseases or ailment for comparison of results.

To help supply these biomaterials we are looking for volunteers in the UK to join our Volunteer ‘donor’ panel.

What does this mean to you as a potential volunteer ‘Donor’?

As a volunteer, you may be asked to donate a sample, this could be Blood, Urine, Faeces, Hair, Saliva or even a very small skin biopsy. All samples will be collected by trained, approved individuals who are experienced in collecting the particular sample, or you will collect and provide yourself in the sample container provided.

For each potential sample donation, you will be provided, in advance, an information sheet about what sample is being collected and you are invited to ask questions about the collection or collection process.

Do I have to take part?

You do not have to take part in the donation and you are free to withdraw at any time during the recruitment/screening phase. If you decide to take part, you will be invited to appointment where you will be screened to specific inclusion/exclusion criteria to ensure you are eligible to take part. You will sign a ‘consent form’ confirming that you wish to take part and are happy for us to collect the sample you are volunteering to donate.

What will I receive in return for the donation of the sample?

On collection of the sample you will receive an honorarium as a payment for out of pocket expenses and to compensate you for your time. The amount will be dependent upon the collection procedure and the number of samples collected and it will be paid by bankers cheque.

Will I be identified in any information sent to the Researchers?

You will not be identified by name in any information provided to the Researchers, they will only be provided information on your age, sex, ethnicity (if required), health status and medication you are currently taking and if selected as a donor because you have a current disease, the status of that disease will be confirmed.

Do I have to have a current disease to take part?

You do not need to have any current disease to take part, as we are also looking for healthy volunteers also. BUT you do not need to be a healthy volunteer to participate however this will be very study specific depending upon the disease of interest being recruited.

What type of illness/disease do I have to have?

You do not have to have an illness or disease. You can be a healthy volunteer ‘Donor’.

An example of the types of people we are looking for are:

Healthy Volunteers

  • Of either sex
  • Of any age (but generally 18 years and over)

  • Lupus
  • Immunosuppressive disorders
  • Blood Borne Diseases

As well as common ailments, such as athletes foot, Cold sores, mouth ulcers

No disease will exclude you from volunteering, there may be a restriction on the number of studies you can participate in.

What types of samples may be collected?

There are a number of common samples that are generally required by researchers, an example of the most common are as follows (but not restricted to):

Blood (Venous and capillary, maximum of 50ml)
